One needs be very careful when discussing this topic to not
overgeneralize. The original observation was made in Britain.
Comparing that to the US for example, with no universal healthcare is
not the same. Many, especially seniors, are forced into relative
poverty by medical problems and high drug cost.Is it destructive
welfare to assist them with healthcare?Does a stroke or diabetes
prove they are lazy and shiftless?
Some of the rhetoric on this thread is almost verbatum what was
said in the British Parliment during the Irish Famine.Google it.There
is a point where we need to help if we are going to have any self
respect for ourselves.
The PI is another matter.IMO there will always be massive poverty
until there is a handle on population growth. This takes time but is
not hard to do. Education and availability of contrceptives are
proven to work.A little land reform and higher min.wages would help
also. Opportunity is a scarce commoditity from what I have seen.
For an individual to get involved seems to me that supporting
microfinance institutions with personal investment is a good way to
go.There is plenty of poor people with plenty of drive to succeed.
They just need the opportunity,a little horse sense, and some capital.

Re: [LinP3] Re: Text Messages

I have sent via Chikka when Yahoo was not working a few times.
Can you receive from them?
Sending from Chikka worked great BTW

[LinP3] Re: Cheap motel in Manila for the night

I stayed there for one night. It was the worst night I spent in the
PH. I got there and they did'nt know anything about my reservation,
they luckily or unluckily had one room left. The aircon barely
worked the toilet did not work properly, and the shower was a
nightmare. I don't think the place had been cleaned in a year. The
hotel was junked up! This is not a shot at them, but I slept better
on concrete floors in Pampanga with lizards and roaches! To be
fair, I did rent two rooms in Boracay from them. They were seaview
rooms which are the only ones I would rent. They were very
adequate. The staff was friendly, you had to go and get everything
yourself but that was fine, they don't charge an arm and a leg for
the place. The townhouse in Manila is in need of some serious
repair.

I don't know who your cell phone service is with, mine in the US is
with Alltel. To send text messages to overseas locations, Alltel
requires that each customer specifically request that feature, and a
higher per message rate applies to those foreign texts. Alltel
customers can receive text messages from overseas locations without
having to make a special feature request. Maybe your carrier has
similar rules?

[LinP3] Re: A lesson in welfare from a Filipino

I was determined not to comment about this subject, especially since
drmike has made most of the points I would have made, though he's
probably done so more articulately than I. I do want to add the caveat
however that, for those contemplating moving here, and who get angry
over the endless river of need, should probably reconsider moving. Why
come to a place that's going to precipitate your anger on a daily and
perhaps an hourly basis? Extreme poverty in the Philippines is not
going to disappear in our lifetime, and those who are in dire
financial straits aren't going to go away any time soon.

[LinP3] Re: Bargain airfare USA to Philippines

Gailen,

You're correct; an ongoing ticket will do. Whoever told you that you must
have a round trip ticket is not aware of the facts.
