Not all of Manila was so great as there was a major brownout from 11.45 pm to 4.00 am. Can you imagine no electricity just before the new year arrives.

Wow! Once again!

Those that have never experienced News Years here in Manila (or the whole festive holiday
season for that matter) ... are missing out! What a treat! This city virtually "EXPLODES". The
noise alone is deafening. There I was standing on the helipad of my condo tower (Ermita)
with a 360 degree view of all Metro Manila, just absolutely stunned, words cannot describe
(nor the video) the Filipino passion for celebration! A third world country? I think not! Haha!
The Philippines btw has been the host to two World Pyro Olympics! Both held at the
Esplanade here in the Mall of Asia! I have yet to experience New Years in the provinces, kinda
wonder?

Re: [LinP3] Blue Cross Blue Shield

I'm looking at surgery at Asian Hospital within next 60 days. Here's the number to call for preauthorization (804) 673-1678. I'm not sure but I believe you can call them collect. I think they answer this number 24/7 so no problem with time difference. The BC/BS rep also told me that, as soon as I know the date I'll be admitted, I could call them and a rep will call Asian Hospital and give them approval to admit and billing instructions. Unfortunately, only the hospitalization can be billed directly to BC/BS; any required medical tests to be done as an outpatient (lab work) must be paid for upfront then a claim sent to BC/BS. Hope this helps.

admittance, a so-called Privilege Card will be given to the patient.

There's also a hospital in Olongapo City that accepts the card. I
forgot its name. I think it's a general hospital.

[LinP3] Bargain airfare USA to Philippines

If there is anybody on this list in the USA and wanting to come to the
Philippines this might interest you. I used to work for a couple of
different airlines and dealt with international fares and tickets. I
still play around and look for bargains just for the fun of it.

January is usually a good time to get bargain seats since most folks
travel in the previous two months if they are going to travel. So in
January the airlines will offer bargains to just fill up the planes
that would otherwise go out with empty seats.

If you go to travelocity.com or orbitz.com and book a one way flight
from LAX to TPE (Taipei, Taiwan) on January 16 you'll find a Malaysia
Air ticket available for only US$443 including taxes (US$453 on
travelocity). The flight arrives in TPE at 6:10 am on the 18th. Next
step is to book online at www.cebupacificair.com for 18 January TPE
flight to Manila. Cost is 2444 Taiwan dollars or about US$75 and
leaves 1:55pm that same day, the 18th. Not a bad connection.

When you arrive in the Philippines you'll need an onward ticket to any
other destination. Just go back to cebupacificair.com (or
www.tigerairways.com or airasia.com: these are great because they fly
out of Clark) and book a flight out to any regional destination, like
Singapore or Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong or Taipei. Just book the flight
ten months or so from now. If you actually use the ticket, fine. If
not, that's okay too since the price is so cheap it's a throw away
ticket. That will satisfy immigration when you come in to the Philippines.

These will be electronic tickets, booked online with your credit card.
All you have to do is print up the receipt the airlines send you by
email. Note that if you go to Malaysia Air's website you won't get the
same fare. This must be a special deal they worked up with Orbitz and
Travelocity for sales only on their websites.

[LinP3] Re: Why giving charity to Filipinas is misguided

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL !

If you send cash you are a generous and wise person and you will be rewarded !
Just send enough for some rice and it will be much appreciated.
A few thousand pesos goes a long way (eg. one months' rent).
We live in a welfare society in US and UK so we should share our good fortunes !
I am self employed and pay my tax and am happy too then some welfare recipients rent rooms from me so we all win !
EVERYBODY WINS IN A WELFARE SOCIETY !
So be generous in the Philippines, buy food for everyone !
Be a walking ATM what a privelige it is !
Money is worthless until; you spend it on someone else !
Have a happy new year !

All the best,

Pa

[LinP3] new year in the province

I really miss New Years celebration in the Philippines especially in
my province - Batangas. Compared to New Years celebration here in
England where the usual thing that people do is go to the pub and get
hammered as a celebration of new year (not as if they don't do it
most days or nights for that matter, hmmm that made me think, maybe
British people thought it is always new year in the UK,LOL).

Anyway, how do we celebrate New Year in the province?
Well, New Years eve, Mum and my sisters were busy the whole day food
shopping then cooking and prepering everything for the family meal at
midnight. Kids would be busy running around and playing which they do
everyday anyway.
My eldest sister and her 3 kids, (my brother-in-law works overseas),
my only brother and sis-in-law and their 5 kids and my yougest sister
(she's 37 and still single)celebrates new year with my mum in her
house with my 10 year old son.
At stroke of midnight, everybody were outside to welcome new year
with a BANG!(Fireworks) afterwards, family meal and then church.

In the afternoon of 1st January, there were games for the kids in my
village where they can earn prizes for winning in a game competition.

As for my New Year, I was working from 7 am to 7 pm New years eve,
home by 8pm, went out for a couple of hours for a curry with my
husband, came home watch the recorded Coronation Street, went to bed,
wake up and go to work AGAIN! And that was my celebration of New Year
in England. I don't even see the living daylight! I MISS HOME!

[LinP3] Re: Why giving charity to Filipinas is misguided

Benny, you are probably right. Hehe ... I just try to avoid making
political comments cuz it sure stirs up the dander in these forums. But
no question, the government could have and should have had the will to
address some of the issues related to social security long ago.

Dear Keith,

While in Manila and where you are they may still be blasting, but here
in Cebu City it was really slow. Over the last ten years I noticed a
decline even though there is more money.

My theory is they get more money selling "fountains," and "roman candles,"
flash, than firecrackers, bang. Flash is big money and easy to buy
anywhere in Cebu City, legal, even the sari sari store. You have to look
for bang. Offically I think they are illegal. I have seen few firecrackers
for sale and was happy not many hands were blown up last night, or at
least not as many as usual according to some reprorters.

Very best always,
Don
