[LinP3] Re: Hotels in Cebu

Vic, I just returned from Cebu a few days ago. I stayed at Casa
Rosario and it meets most of your criteria. 5 minute walk to
Robinson's and Fuente Osmena. Around P50 taxi ride to Ayala. Small
restaurant off the lobby but many restaurants within a 5 minute walk
also. Chow King, KFC, Mickey D's, Jolllibee and many others. Clean
rooms. In room internet, you supply your own computer. I brought my laptop. Or use the computer in the lobby for P30 per hour. Limited parking however. Standard room is P1100. I added the internet for P100 per night and a fridge for P100 a night. Total P1300 per night.
This will be my home away from home from now on. If you'd like to see
pictures I have a foto blog of my trip at
http://travelswithgoyo.wordpress.com Look for the post titled "Casa
Rosario". It was great for my asawa and I and I recommend it for your consideration.

Re: [LinP3] Questions frequenly asked by Filipinos

Hi Velty,
I am retired USN and moved here in 2002 and have been here ever since.
My wife and I had to setup some ground rules, one of the most important ones being I will not allow relatives to intervence in my household affairs unless we ask for it. I will listen politely to their advice and do what I want to anyways. I avoid any kind of direct confrontation unless I am backed into a cormer with no other options. I also refuse to engage in gossip aka cheezemiz.

The questions that bother me the most are those relating to income. That's just plain none of their business. When pressed I say enough to be comfortable and that's the end of it. The other one is why I don't have kids. The answer should be obvious after almost 8 years together, we can't and my wife does not wish to adopt. HTH

Subject: [LinP3] Questions frequenly asked by Filipinos

As a Filipino American retiree, I have been amazed by what my fellow
Filipinos requently ask me. They usually ask me questions such as: How
much is your pension? How much salary did you receive while living in
the United States? How much is your wife's disability payments. In
other words, I have been asked personal questions that I think I am
not supposed to answer. And some of them, including some of my in-laws
have been intervening in my household affairs. You should do this, you
should do that, they say.

I'm just curious. In your mingling with Filipinos, have many of you
been questioned about your personal affairs or whatever? What are the
questions you have been asked that you hated most?

Thanks.

[LinP3] Re:Questions frequenly asked by Filipinos

Velty,
Most of pinoys esp. relatives don't see it as too intruding or personal. They're just curious
of it and what if they had the same opportunity just like you and live with that kind of pension in PI, how lucky they would be.They're just wishing themselves to be like you. Be humble.
Now, regarding your in laws telling you this and that esp. money matters, then that's another story. Be wary, since they're most likely interested to get a piece of your hard earned pension by introducing any kind of business (monkey or not). just my 2 cents.

Your kababayan,
Dave

[LinP3] Re: Dating in the Philippines

Hello Dave,
You're welcome. I tend to be a passive reader here for the most part but when there are questions and topics that I feel I could throw in my two cents, I make my presence felt. :)

As for my livejournal/blog, I don't mind you sharing the link. I appreciate it. I am glad that you liked and "felt" what I posted just a few hours ago. That was probably the most honest and from the heart entry
that I ever wrote in my entire life.

I wish you and all the members of the group the best of the coming year. :)

[LinP3] Re: Dating in the Philippines

Hello Joane and thanks for this input. If you represent an average
filipina then my January visit will be quite pleasant indeed.

"Hello Group, I am a Filipina and as for dating, you just have to
set it straight. You could be dating someone but you need to specify
if what you have is an open relationship or an exclusive one."

Quote: "You did something amazing for me this month. It felt magical,
wonderful and to some extent, surreal. While I have quite a number of
challenges that I'm facing head on, I can't really remember smiling
more and laughing this much until this period in my life. For the
first time, everything made perfect sense"

I 'feel' these words, but joanne wrote them at
http://joannethursday.livejournal.com/
I hope you don't mind that I
reprinted this link from your Yahoo profile, joanne, but it is a
remarkable piece of prose because it gives me, and other single
interested males, an insight into the mind of a single, eligible,
filipina.

[LinP3] Re: Girl problem - Is sending money always the right thing to do?

"Under no circumstances should you send any money.
Even if you think you have come to know your Intended very well."

This is the advice that appeared at the head of each profile page on a Free Dating in the Philippines Web Site I used up to about eight months ago. I believe it proved not only to be soundly based on a known practice but to be the wisest piece of advice you could ever receive in the early stages of a relationship. Several young hopefuls found themselves abruptly and
permanently cut-off, forever, on account of it.

The request for you to support some cause or other comes up, as a rule, about two weeks into Chatting. They range from the need for hospitalization (usually of the father) to being unable to pay the rent. To the Western senses they appeared to be saying: "try him and see if he's the soft touch". The amounts are always clearly stated, as are the reasons for it, even if they have the familiar ring of: "I have heard that one before".

Six months of frequent Chatting and exchanging lifestyle and family information by Post led me to believe this final Contact really was the right one. Sincere, with steady academic employment and a self-sufficient attitude to back it up. Her family appearing to be a well respected identity in the Town in which they lived, and from what I could judge would be what are known in the West as Middle Class. At no stage did they appear to ask her to press me for money, and indeed the young lady herself (actually middle aged and never married) always seemed very capable of managing her own financial affairs. In all, the sort of person to easily consider advancing your relationship to the very serious if that was your intent (and I had already made mine known).

So it came as a tremendous shock (almost eight months down the line) to be asked outright, during a Chat Session, for 5000 pesos to make the trip to a family reunion. The Cam was on at the time, and when I had recovered I had the presence of mind to study her facial expressions. Usually smiling and cheerful looking she had taken on a very serious countenance but there was
no sign of apprehension or fear? It was a "business as usual expression" and as I played for time by pleading ignorance on what method might get it to her by the scheduled date, she seemed to have all the information right at her fingertips without ever glancing down to look at the script!

The outcome at this point is "No outcome". At the close of Chat I put a block on the Messenger Service leaving only an Email link, with an email waiting for a "Please convince me as to why I shouldn't shut down this relationship completely?" I have not of course sent any money and have no intention of doing so. In fact the only reason I have left the Mail link open is on account of how far our relationship had travelled, though I doubt it will be travelling much further.

[LinP3] Re: Girl problem - Is sending money always the right thing to do?

"You can give without loving but you can not love without
giving"

I appreciate the sentiment but the reverse seems also true: You can
receive (money) without thinking the man at the other end of the
Internet is a fool but you can not think him a fool if you never
receive money from him.

I, like many other North American men, have sent money to a girl I met
on the Internet. I don't do that anymore. But as you mention, when I
feel the love, I shall feel in a giving mood. I am on my way to your
country to see what I shall see.

[LinP3] Re: medical questions

On Dec 19 I visited my local public health office, (in Canada), to
discuss vaccinations for my upcoming (Jan 9) trip to Cebu. I was
fortunate enough to have an expat Filipina nurse give me my shots and
all the info I could possibly need regarding my health while in the
Philippines. (I cannot believe everything she said because she told
me there are no crocodiles in the Philippines and I later saw a
picture of one on the internet :-)

So I received Hep A and B vaccinations. A TD/Adacel for tetanus and
diphtheria. Dukoral, Oral Vaccine To Stop Travelers' Diarrhea. Oral
Typhoid vaccine. Also recommended were vaccines for Rabies and
Japanese Encephalitis but I did not have enough time for these to be
effective. I also received a recommendation to bring a Malaria
regimen but only if I planned to travel away from Cebu.

I was warned to bring effective mosquito repellent (minimum 30% Deet)
because of the Dengue fever.

So . . for those of you living in the Philippines . . what do you
think of all this?

[LinP3] Re: Customs?

I always use a TSA approved lock to keep my luggag secure. Never had
a problem even when traveling to the Phils.

Now for the shocker. I saw a internet video last week that
demonstrated how to open a zippered suitcase with a ballpoint pen. I
wish now I hadn' deleted it. The person inserted the pointed end of
the pen into the zipper and pushed it from one side to the other.
When he was done he was able to close the zipper. No damage was done
and no way of telling it was ever opened.

When you got to your destination and opened your luggage you realized
that you were ripped off. Of course since the suitcase is still
"locked" you assume TSA did it.

[LinP3] Re: Chaperoned Dating ...

Hi Greg,
Chaperoned dating is not as popular as it used to be but still is practiced in some families. Mostly it's with the younger kids.
I seriously doubt it would be expected unless you were dating someone half your age. I met my wife through mutual friends.
She was 32 and I was 40 at the time. We were not chaperoned.

I would suggest you take your next vacation over here and experience the culture and beauty of the Philippines. If you happen to head down to Iloilo, I have a real sweetheart of a cousin that is about your age and would be happy to make introductions. Good luck.

Subject: [LinP3] Chaperoned Dating ...

I've been a lurker in the group for a short time now, so with this
topic, I'd like to introduce myself.

Hello everyone! I'm Greg, fifty one, live in the States and am single.
Over here I've interacted with a handful of Filipino's (I work with
two) and have been wowed by their pleasant & charming dispositions, so
I joined the group to learn more about your culture.

As I am single, I would dearly love to find a partner for the second
half of my life. From what I've experienced (now please understand,
this is simply based upon their beauty and their lovely and gracious
disposition) I think I'd be very foolish indeed to not at least open
the door to the possibility of a Filipina Bride.

So my question to the group: If I should happen to meet a Filipina,
around my age, whom I found totally captivating, and of course, she
would seem to be interested in me also, would a chaperoned date be
expected?

Thanks a lot!
